Loons are aquatic, able to swim great distances underwater, but they are quite clumsy on land. The Common Loon is known for its distinctive laughing call. Generally about 28" to 35", they have a black-and-white checkerboard pattern, with a black head and white necklace. They range from Alaska to Newboundland, wintering on the Great Lakes and along coasts.
