His studies with master carvers taught him the techniques, while his affinity to the world of birds constantly nourishes his creativity, making his work distinctive.
John begins with a block of wood, such as tupelo or basswood, and roughs out the shape. Each species is meticulously studied to create the perfect contours. The feathers are etched and burned to capture the bird's complex, elegant plumage; then the brilliant design of nature's hues is realized through precise painting techniques.
John finishes by choosing an artistic mount which suits the style and form of each carved bird, often reflecting its natural habitat.
This artist's precision, research, and artistry have garnered top awards at competitions throughout Canada and internationally at the Ward World Championships.
The gallery tab shows a selection of John's carvings. (Click on each image for a description of the bird and additional photographs.) Recent carvings are displayed at the studio. John is continually researching new species and presentations, and custom orders are accepted.
